More than just a pretty smile, dental care is health care.

Did you know that 80% of dogs and 70% of cats develop periodontal disease by age 3? Routine dental care is essential for preventing this common condition and ensuring your pet’s overall well-being.

Just like annual wellness exams, dental care is a vital part of helping your pet live a longer, healthier, and more comfortable life.

Untreated dental conditions can cause:
  • Pain
  • Discomfort
  • Infection
  • Tooth loss
  • Damage to internal organs, including the heart, liver, and kidneys
Your pet’s teeth should be checked by a vet annually — or sooner if symptoms arise. Signs that your pet is overdue for a dental exam:
  • Discolored teeth
  • Broken or loose teeth
  • Difficulty chewing or dropping food when eating
  • Consistent bad breath
  • Excessive drooling
  • Reduced appetite or refusal to eat
  • Bleeding or swelling around the mouth
  • Pawing at their face or mouth

Not only do dentals prevent pain or serious health issues, but they also save pet owners money in the long run. The cost of preventive care is around one-third the cost of treating dental disease. We’re extending our 20% off dentals offer through March.

What Happens at a Dental Cleaning

A dental cleaning, or a Complete Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT), includes a full assessment of your pet’s mouth, teeth, and gums, including X-ray imaging, while they are under general anesthesia. Our vets will check for infection and bone loss around the tooth roots and examine for any areas that may be causing your pet pain.

Annual dental evaluations and cleanings allow our veterinarians to:

  • Perform a thorough oral examination
  • Detect hidden dental issues not visible without a full exam
  • Remove plaque and tartar below the gumline
  • Prevent infection, discomfort, and long-term health complications

If we haven’t seen your pet within the past year, you will need to schedule a pre-dental exam before bringing your pet for a dental cleaning.

If you have questions about dental cleanings or want help determining if a dental exam is right for your pet, our team is always happy to help! Give us a call at (425) 771-6300 to talk more.

Other Ways to Improve Your Pet’s Dental Health

Nutrition:

Not only does proper nutrition play a major role in your pet’s overall well-being, it’s an important factor in your pet’s dental health.

Teeth Brushing:

To help prevent dental issues, brush your pet’s teeth at least three times a week. Make sure you use a toothpaste that is designed for pets, and take your time slowly introducing your dog or cat to the process before making it a regular practice.

Chews and Treats:

Dental chews are an easy way to add more dental health measures to your pet’s routine. Choose dental treats that have the VOHC seal, or check out the list of recommended products on the Veterinary Oral Health Council’s website.
